How to use past papers effectively

Match the exam board, qualification and syllabus code before choosing a paper. Two courses with similar names can have different content, paper structures and mark schemes. The four-character code on your syllabus or exam entry is the safest identifier.

In IGCSEfy, open the relevant entry from the subject catalogue. If an archive is available, the course page links to papers for that exact code rather than substituting a similarly named subject.

Select one year, exam series, paper and variant. Keep the question paper and its matching mark scheme together. If the paper needs an insert, transcript or other supporting document, open that as well before you begin.

A variant is part of the paper identity, not a difficulty setting. Use one complete variant for a timed attempt instead of mixing questions from different variants without a reason.

1. Read the instructions and time allowance printed on the paper.
2. Work without the mark scheme and use only the materials the paper permits.
3. Mark any question you had to guess or leave incomplete. Those marks are more useful for revision than the final score alone.
4. Stop when the printed time is over if you are practising exam pace; continue in a different colour if you also want to finish the work.

Compare each response with the matching mark scheme. Record why marks were lost: missing knowledge, a method error, misreading the command word, weak working, or running out of time. One line per mistake is enough if it tells you what to change next time.

If a mark scheme allows several answers, do not copy every option. Check whether your response meets one accepted route and whether the required working or explanation is present.

Update the paper's status in IGCSEfy, then return to the relevant syllabus topics. Revise the gaps you identified and retry the missed questions without looking at your first answer. A later paper should test whether the same error has actually disappeared.

The useful cycle is simple: attempt, diagnose, revise, retry. Doing more papers without the middle two steps creates activity, but it can leave the same weaknesses untouched.
